What Happened to BI-LO and Winn-Dixie?
BI-LO. BI-LO was a grocery banner of Southeastern Grocers; the BI-LO stores it agreed to sell in 2020 were in the Carolinas and Georgia. In May 2020, Southeastern Grocers agreed to sell 62 stores (46 BI-LO and 16 Harveys) to Food Lion, and in September 2020 it agreed to sell 23 more stores to Alex Lee and B&T Foods. Its January 2021 prospectus said that after selling or closing its remaining BI-LO stores in the first half of 2021 it would no longer operate the BI-LO banner. A former BI-LO building today may be a Food Lion, a store under another banner, a re-tenanted box or vacant.
Winn-Dixie and Harveys. In August 2023, ALDI agreed to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, about 400 stores, as part of a larger divestiture of Southeastern Grocers, their parent, to various entities. ALDI completed the acquisition in March 2024 and began converting some stores to the ALDI format. In February 2025, ALDI sold the Southeastern Grocers business, including about 170 unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores, to an investor group that included the company’s leadership and C&S Wholesale Grocers. On January 21, 2026, Southeastern Grocers officially became The Winn-Dixie Company, and in June 2026 it completed converting its last Harveys Supermarket stores to the Winn-Dixie banner. In August 2026, C&S Wholesale Grocers announced a proposed transaction to become the majority owner of The Winn-Dixie Company, expected to close in early 2027.
Southeastern Grocers’ 2018 Chapter 11
Southeastern Grocers filed a prepackaged Chapter 11 case in March 2018, after reaching agreement with major creditors before filing, and emerged on May 31, 2018; it reduced outstanding debt by $635.9 million in connection with the reorganization, according to its 2021 prospectus. As general information, not legal advice: in Chapter 11 a debtor tenant acting as debtor in possession may, subject to the court’s approval and the conditions in section 365, assume or reject an unexpired lease (11 U.S.C. 365(a) and 1107(a)), so store performance and rent relative to market can matter as much as the brand.

| Sold by ALDI in February 2025 | Operated by The Winn-Dixie Company, private, with no current agency rating in our ratings database | Underwrite operator credit and confirm any guarantor |

Re-Tenanting Former Southeastern Grocers Properties
Possible re-uses of a former supermarket box include discount and conventional grocers, value retailers, large-format fitness operators and medical users. Re-use depends on the box size, parking, the shopping center’s co-tenants and any use restrictions in the center, so evaluate each property on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BI-LO still in business?
No. Southeastern Grocers agreed in May 2020 to sell 62 BI-LO and Harveys stores to Food Lion, agreed in September 2020 to sell 23 more stores to Alex Lee and B&T Foods, and said in January 2021 that after selling or closing its remaining BI-LO stores it would no longer operate the BI-LO banner. Its successor, The Winn-Dixie Company, now operates its stores under the Winn-Dixie banner.
What happened to Winn-Dixie?
ALDI acquired Winn-Dixie’s parent, Southeastern Grocers, in March 2024 and converted some stores to ALDI. In February 2025 it sold the remaining business, about 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores, to an investor group that included C&S Wholesale Grocers. The company now operates as The Winn-Dixie Company, and in August 2026 C&S announced a proposed transaction to become its majority owner, expected to close in early 2027.
If I own a former Winn-Dixie property, who is my tenant now?
It depends on the property. If your store was converted to ALDI, review the lease, any assignment and a current estoppel to confirm whether an ALDI entity is now the tenant or guarantor. If your store operates as Winn-Dixie, including former Harveys Supermarket stores converted to Winn-Dixie by June 2026, the tenant may be a Winn-Dixie Company entity, a private operator with no current agency rating in our ratings database, but only the lease, any assignment and a current estoppel can confirm the tenant and any guarantor. Confirm with your lease documents and counsel.
